Ready or Not Censorship: Console Sales Boom

Void Interactive’s tactical shooter, Ready or Not, recently underwent minor content modifications to align with console platform standards ahead of its console release. These changes—described by some as sanitization and by others as censorship—included adjustments or removals of certain graphic scenes, such as depictions involving a child convulsing and a naked man in a ghillie suit. The studio’s approach sparked immediate backlash from segments of the PC community, leading to a wave of negative Steam reviews and vocal complaints. Some players specifically asked for a toggle on PC that would allow them to enable or disable the censored content, though this option has not been offered.

Despite frustrations among its established PC audience, Void Interactive’s decision appears strategically sound from a commercial standpoint. According to CEO Julio Rodriguez, Ready or Not reached one million units sold on console within approximately 3.6 days—a remarkable acceleration compared to the 36 days required to reach the same milestone during its PC launch. This rapid sales momentum on new platforms underscores the potential benefits of adapting content for broader market access, even at the risk of short-term community backlash.

While Steam reviews trended negative following the update, the game’s overall engagement metrics have improved. Recent data shows concurrent Steam player counts rising sharply from under 6,000 to around 40,000, nearing the all-time high of just over 55,000 set more than a year prior. This surge suggests renewed interest or curiosity, possibly driven by increased visibility from the console launch.
