Riot Games to Penalize Off-Platform Conduct

Riot Games will begin enforcing penalties against content creators for off-platform conduct starting 3 January 2025, when Riot games appear as the background of their content. The policy, announced via Valorant social channels on 27 November 2024 and echoed by community accounts, allows the developer to issue in-game penalties for behavior occurring outside the game itself. For example, a creator who uses hateful slurs about an opposing player or teammate on stream can be penalized as if the slurs were typed in in-game chat or spoken in voice comms.

The rule applies specifically to content where Riot’s games are the background of the content produced. Riot stated it will not proactively monitor all social content but reserves the right to act when such behavior is brought to its attention. Consequences include restricting access to Riot accounts and suspending Partner Program privileges for partnered creators. As Riot summarized, “if you say or do things that break our Terms of Service while broadcasting or creating content about our games, we can restrict access to your Riot accounts (and suspend your Partner privileges if you are part of our Partner Program).”

This update is part of broader efforts to reduce toxicity in Riot’s playerbase. Riot framed the change as protecting players across the various places that touch their gaming experience. Earlier this year, Riot Games head Anna Donlon expressed commitment to eliminating egregious behaviors while acknowledging the developer has no plans to “sanitise gaming” or suppress harmless banter. The new policy extends enforcement of community standards beyond in-game interactions to ensure consistent protection, with Riot noting that harmful behavior during content creation involving its games will now carry in-game penalties.
